A broad surf beach backed by cliffs and destination facilities.
Watergate Bay sits a few miles north of Newquay. At low tide the sand extends for more than two miles, while the central valley provides the easiest route onto the beach. Cliffs back much of the bay, so the main access area matters when carrying boards or meeting a lesson.
Wavehunters and Westcountry Surf School both teach here. The open Atlantic setting can provide plenty of surf, but beginners should read that as a reason to use qualified instruction—not a promise of easy conditions.

Allow time at the central access
The beach-side car parks are convenient and become busy. Arrive early enough to park, change and find the correct base without rushing a fixed lesson time.
Keep the flags in sight
Low tide creates a huge beach, but cliffs back the bay and the supervised water is marked locally. Do not trade a lifeguarded zone for an empty peak.

Parking and access
Two car parks sit close to the main beach access. The valley route is the easiest way down; paths elsewhere meet steep cliffs, so families and lesson groups should use their provider's directions.
Toilets and changing
Public toilets include an accessible toilet, baby changing and showers. Wavehunters also lists indoor changing cubicles, lockers and hot showers at its beach base.
Food and mixed groups
Cafés, restaurants and accommodation sit around the central access, making it easy for non-surfers to stay close to the lesson without carrying everything back to the car.
Dogs and accessibility
Visit Newquay lists dogs as welcome all year. A beach wheelchair is available through Wavehunters free of charge, subject to the centre operating and the chair being available.
