Watergate Bay at a glance
Watergate Bay is a two-mile sweep of sand below the cliffs about three miles north of Newquay, beside the hamlet of Tregurrian and below the B3276 coast road to Padstow. It faces north-west into the Atlantic and is one of the most exposed beaches on this stretch, which is exactly why surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers come here. Its scale means you rarely feel hemmed in, even in summer.
The tide shapes the day. At low water the beach seems endless; at high tide much of it disappears and the sea reaches the foot of the cliffs. The easiest way down is the central valley, where the hotel, cafés, toilets, shop and the surf schools are clustered. Other paths come down the cliffs, but the valley is the one to use with boards and children.
The Watergate Bay Hotel opened in 1900 to serve rail visitors on a planned line from Padstow to Newquay that was never built. Since 2007 the bay has hosted the English National Surfing Championships, and it has appeared on screen in Echo Beach and the surf film Plunge. Crowds gather around the central access, but the long beach usually thins out to the north.

Surfing Watergate Bay
Watergate is a fairly exposed beach break with lefts and rights that picks up most Atlantic swells. Surf-forecast gives a west-north-west groundswell and a light south-easterly offshore wind as the ideal combination, and warns of dangerous rips. Banks run along the full length of the bay, so there are usually several peaks to choose from.
Reviewers note the banks change with the tide and that paddling out can be hard on bigger days, sometimes impossible when two swells overlap. It can also be breezy. If the central peaks are busy, walking north along the sand usually finds more space, but keep the rising tide in mind.
