Mawgan Porth at a glance
Mawgan Porth is a small settlement about four miles north of Newquay, where the River Menalhyl reaches the sea at the end of the Vale of Lanherne. The sandy beach is backed by dunes and sheltered by high cliffs at each end. The village sits right behind the sand, with a pub, a general store, hotels and guest houses, so it is an easy park-and-walk beach day.
The river crosses the beach on its way to the sea, so keep an eye on younger children around it, especially as the tide changes. The South West Coast Path runs behind the beach, linking it south to Watergate Bay, just around the headland, and north along the cliffs towards Bedruthan. The coast path makes it easy to combine a surf with a cliff walk, and parking right behind the beach means you can come and go with the tide.
People have lived here for a long time. Excavations between 1949 and 1974 uncovered a late Saxon settlement from roughly 850 to 1050 AD, with courtyard houses and a burial ground. The beach holds a Marine Conservation Society recommendation, and The Beach Guide describes its waves as good and often uncrowded compared with its busier neighbours. Bring a picnic or use the village shop.

Surfing Mawgan Porth
Mawgan Porth faces west and works on a west-north-west swell with an easterly, offshore wind. Surf-forecast classes it as a river break, with waves peeling left near the river mouth, and several peaks can form across the bay when the banks are good. On most days it is smaller than Watergate.
Surf-forecast says the tide doesn't greatly affect quality, but it warns of dangerous rips and notes it can get crowded when the surf is working. The river changes the sandbanks, so check the flags and ask the lifeguards before paddling out.
