Constantine Bay at a glance
Constantine Bay is a wide sandy beach about three miles west of Padstow, in the parish of St Merryn and within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Rocky reefs frame its edges, Trevose Head rises to the north, and a large dune system runs behind the sand. Unlike sheltered Harlyn round the headland, it faces west straight into the Atlantic.
It takes its name from St Constantine, a sixth-century Cornish saint, and St Constantine's Well can still be reached on a public right of way across the Trevose golf course. Farmers once carted sand away by horse and cart to lighten their heavy fields. Today the dunes are part of the Trevose Head and Constantine Bay SSSI and are in declining condition, so stick to the marked paths through them.
Facilities are deliberately simple: there are toilets and a car park, and that is about it. The car park fills quickly in summer, but Treyarnon Bay is about a ten-minute walk away and makes a good alternative base. The beach has excellent water quality and a Marine Conservation Society recommendation, and the rocks are good for rock-pooling at low tide.
Surf guide
Surfing Constantine Bay
Constantine is an exposed, very consistent spot that picks up most west and north-west swells. Surf-forecast lists it as a beach and reef break: the sandbanks between the rocks produce lefts and rights, and there is also a left-hand reef. A west swell with light easterly winds blowing offshore gives the best conditions, and it can be surfed through the tide.
The power comes with a cost. Surf-forecast warns of dangerous rips, and the rocky edges catch out people drifting along the beach. It gets busy when the surf is good. If you are still learning, it is usually better to head round to Harlyn and leave Constantine for days when you are confident in bigger waves.
Intermediate and up
Punchy waves and rips; learners are better off at Harlyn.
West swell, east wind
Light easterlies are offshore; very consistent through the year.
Rips and rocks
Stay within the flags when lifeguards are on duty and keep away from the rocky edges.

Limited car park
The car park fills quickly in summer. If it's full, walk about ten minutes from Treyarnon.
Toilets only
Bring food and drink; there are no cafés on the beach itself.
Seasonal patrol
Swim between the red and yellow flags when lifeguards are on duty and check the local signs.
Allowed all year
The Beach Guide lists dogs as allowed all year; Cornwall Council lists no restriction here. Check entrance signs.
Protected habitat
The dunes are part of an SSSI and are eroding, so use the marked paths.
