Harlyn Bay at a glance
Harlyn Bay is a sandy, north-facing beach about three miles west of Padstow, between Trevone to the east and Cataclews Point to the west. It is backed by low dunes and cliffs, with a shop, café and pub right by the sand. The village behind is small and quiet for much of the year, and the area sits within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Because it faces north rather than west, Harlyn is tucked away from much of the prevailing wind and swell. That makes it the calmer choice when nearby Constantine and Treyarnon are big and messy, and it is why it is so often used for lessons. The Beach Guide describes it as a family favourite and one of Cornwall's best places to learn to surf.
There is deep history under the sand. In 1865 a labourer found two gold lunulae above Onjohn Cove, probably early Bronze Age, which are now at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. In 2014 storms exposed an ancient burial cist. The coast path links Harlyn west to Mother Ivey's Bay and Trevose Head, and east to Trevone. Harlyn Estates still looks after the farm and many of the archaeological sites.
Surf guide
Surfing Harlyn Bay
Harlyn needs a decent swell to wake up. Surf-forecast lists it as a sheltered beach break that works only occasionally, best on a west-north-west swell with a southerly to south-westerly wind blowing offshore. It is often flat in summer and more consistent from autumn to spring.
Its value is as a shelter spot: when the open beaches round Trevose Head are maxed out, Harlyn can be the place still producing smaller, cleaner waves. That brings crowds, and submerged rocks are a hazard, so stay within the lifeguarded area.
