Research-based take: Thurso East is genuinely one of Europe's standout cold-water reef waves and a destination in its own right. It is also a poor choice for beginners: shallow reef, a concentrated take-off and serious crowd dynamics make it an advanced/expert surf rather than a sightseeing-led 'have a go' beach.
Research-based take: Thurso Beach is a useful, accessible town beach rather than the reason most surfers travel to Thurso. On a clean north to north-west swell it can produce fun lefts and rights over sand, and it is much less consequential than Thurso East, but visitors should not assume that means it is always beginner-safe.
