Research-based take: one of Scotland's easiest surf destinations to recommend to ordinary visitors because it combines a forgiving sandy bay, an established surf school, proper parking/toilets/showers and the amenities of Dunbar. It is more of a reliable learning/longboard destination than a high-performance surf trip.

Best for beginners, improvers, families and longboarders. Intermediates can have fun when there is more swell. Advanced surfers will normally treat it as a convenient session rather than a destination for heavy waves.
What type of break is it: beach, reef, point, harbour, or mixed?
Mainly a beach break with some reef influence/features, particularly toward the edges. It should not be marketed as a pure reef break.
What is the seabed?
Mostly sand with sandbanks, plus rock/reef sections around parts of the bay. The estuary and shifting banks influence where the best peaks form.
Which swell directions generally work?
North-east swell is the key direction; easterly components can also produce surf. It needs North Sea energy, so long flat spells are possible.
Which wind directions generally work?
West to west-south-west is generally offshore/cleanest. Strong east/north-east winds make it messy.
Which stages of tide work best?
Surf guides do not identify one universally superior tide. The bay can work through much of the tide, but the estuary, sandbanks and very large tidal movement change the walk and wave character. Treat the best tide as bank-dependent rather than fixed.
When is it usually most consistent?
Winter and spring are generally the most dependable seasons for surf, although beginner sessions operate March-November when conditions allow.
How crowded does it become?
Usually manageable rather than intimidating. It gets busiest around good forecasts, weekends, summer lessons and longboard-friendly days, but the beach has room to spread out.

Rip currents, cold water, rapidly advancing tide across the flats/estuary, strong wind and the possibility of being cut off around tidal channels. Do not confuse a gentle-looking inside with a harmless sea.

Coast to Coast Surf School operates from Belhaven Surf Centre at 36 Back Road and teaches at Belhaven Beach. The centre also hosts community surf activity and The Wave Project.

Research recommendation: Coast to Coast is the obvious Surfbooker feature because it is established at the beach, offers a full progression path and publishes detailed safety/lesson information. Do not label it personally reviewed until Surfbooker has actually attended.

Yes. Coast to Coast's beginner lessons are for complete beginners, minimum age 7, with a requirement to swim 50 metres unaided. Family/private lessons are available.

Where can visitors hire boards and wetsuits?
Coast to Coast hires foam and hard surfboards, wetsuits and other watersports equipment from the Belhaven Surf Centre.
Can equipment be collected at the beach?
Yes. Hire is run from the surf centre immediately beside the south side of Belhaven Beach, so it is effectively beach collection rather than transporting gear from town.
Are there surf shops nearby?
Coast to Coast's centre is the main practical surf-hire/booking point. Dunbar is close for general retail, but this is not a surf-shop strip.
Are there seasonal closures or booking limitations?
Beginner lessons are advertised March-November, daily subject to waves. No waves or extreme weather can mean an alternative activity, reschedule, voucher or refund. Pre-booking is sensible in weekends/holidays.

Getting to Belhaven Bay
Where should visitors park?
Use Shore Road/Belhaven Bay car park by John Muir Country Park and the surf centre.
What does parking cost?
East Lothian currently lists £3 per day. A ticket can be used at participating coastal car parks that day. This supersedes older pages that still mention £2.50.
Are there seasonal opening times, tolls, height barriers, or payment restrictions?
Charging is 8:00-18:30 from 1 April-30 September and 8:00-16:00 from 1 October-31 March. Pay-and-display or RingGo is available. Parking is prohibited 23:00-04:00. The visitor page lists no vehicle-height restriction.
How far is the walk from parking to the water?
From the main car park/surf centre it is only a few minutes to the beach edge, although the waterline can be much farther away at low tide.
Is access difficult while carrying equipment?
Usually straightforward. The bigger issue is low tide: carrying a board across a wide expanse of sand can become a much longer walk than the map suggests.
Is the location accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs?
The car park and surf-centre area are accessible and there is an accessible toilet. The natural sand/tidal flats limit beach-wheelchair use. Pushchairs can access the general area, but routes onto soft sand vary with tide/ground conditions.
Are toilets available?
Yes, official visitor information lists toilets and accessible toilets.
Are showers or changing facilities available?
Yes. The Belhaven Surf Centre has heated outdoor/community showers; Coast to Coast currently states hot showers are available for £1 for one minute. It also has changing rooms and toilets for centre users/groups.
Are lifeguards present? If so, when?
No. The RNLI stated in July 2026 that East Lothian has no lifeguarded beaches. Treat Belhaven as unlifeguarded.
Are there swimming, surfing, or dog zones?
There is no permanent RNLI flag zoning. Organised surf activity may establish safe areas. Dogs are generally part of the country-park environment, but owners must follow seasonal wildlife signage and keep them controlled around nesting birds/livestock.
What mobile reception and emergency access are like?
Mobile coverage is generally better than at remote Highland/island spots because Dunbar is adjacent, but never rely on signal at water level. Emergency vehicle access is relatively good from Shore Road; in any coastal emergency call 999/112 and ask for Coastguard.

Belhaven itself is best for surf convenience; Dunbar town centre is the better all-round base for restaurants, shops, rail access and evening options.
Is staying beside the beach worthwhile, or is a nearby town a better base?
For most visitors, Dunbar is the better base because Belhaven is only minutes away. Staying beside the bay is worthwhile for families/campers or anyone prioritising sunrise/early sessions.
