Widemouth at a glance
Bude's broad surf beach, with room beyond one central peak.
Widemouth Bay is a long sandy beach a short drive south of Bude. Low cliffs and rock formations back the bay, while rocky reefs at the edges create rock-pooling areas when the tide drops. The main access brings together parking, cafés, facilities and the two listed lesson operators.
Its exposure is both the appeal and the caution. Sandbanks can provide several peaks, but swell, wind and water movement change quickly. Beginners should use a school and the flagged area; independent surfers need to identify the reefs as well as the working banks.

Visit Bude lists level access with a ramp onto the sand, an accessible café and accessible toilets at the main beach.
Plan around the dog ban
Dogs are prohibited from 10am–6pm between 15 May and 30 September. Check the council map and entrance signs for the controlled area.
Keep the flags in sight
The long beach invites a walk for space, but the RNLI zone provides the clearest supervised place for families and less experienced surfers.

Before you choose Widemouth.
Is Widemouth good for beginners?
Yes on suitable days with a school. Larger or wind-affected surf can make the exposed bay inappropriate for a first lesson.
When is Widemouth lifeguarded in 2026?
The RNLI lists 3–19 April, 25–26 April, daily patrols from 2 May–27 September, weekends from 3–18 October and 24 October–1 November, 10am–6pm.
