Summerleaze at a glance
Summerleaze is the beach right in front of Bude, at the point where the River Neet and the Bude Canal meet the sea. At low tide it is a huge expanse of sand stretching out past the breakwater; at high tide it shrinks back towards the sea pool and the beach huts.
It is the easiest beach in north Cornwall to combine a surf lesson with a full family day: the town's cafés, shops and toilets are within a few minutes' walk, and Bude Sea Pool — a partly natural tidal pool built into the rocks — gives sheltered swimming when the sea is rough.
The river mouth, the breakwater and moving sandbanks mean the surf changes a lot through the tide, so use the lifeguarded zones and let a school pick the spot if you are new.

Surfing Summerleaze
Summerleaze faces west and picks up Atlantic swell, but the breakwater and Compass Point give the northern side some shelter. Banks form around the river channel and along the beach, so the best spot changes from week to week.
Light easterly winds are offshore. On bigger days the river mouth can create strong currents — keep within the flagged areas.

Summerleaze car park is right beside the beach; the Wharf car park and Bude's seasonal park-and-ride (which stops at Summerleaze and Crooklets) help on busy days.
