Porthmeor at a glance
Porthmeor is St Ives' Atlantic beach, on the north side of the town and a short walk from the harbour, with Tate St Ives just above the sand. It faces west-north-west, so it picks up far more swell than sheltered Porthminster on the other side of town, and it is the town's main surf beach. Rocks frame both ends and the beach narrows as the tide rises.
The buildings along its edge tell its story. The Porthmeor Studios were built in 1801 as cellars, salt houses and net lofts for the pilchard fishery. From the 1880s artists moved in, drawn by the north light, and Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Francis Bacon all worked there. The studios, refurbished in 2010–12, are still in use, with tall windows looking straight out at the waves.
It makes an easy surf-and-town day: a lesson or a session in the morning, then lunch, galleries and the harbour on foot. Parking is the tricky part. Porthmeor's own car park is small and short-stay, so most visitors use Trenwith above the town with its seasonal shuttle. Arriving early in summer helps, and the walk down through the old town lanes is part of the appeal.

Surfing Porthmeor
Porthmeor is an exposed beach break with lefts and rights that works on a west-north-west groundswell. Because the bay faces north-west, southerly winds are offshore — useful when other north coast beaches are blown out. Surf-forecast rates winter, and December in particular, as the best season.
Around high water the waves can stop breaking against the shorter beach, so lessons move with the tide rather than a fixed timetable. Surf-forecast warns of dangerous rips, and the rocky edges get closer as the tide comes in. First-timers are taught in waist-deep water within the flagged area.
