Porthmeor at a glance
A compact surf beach on the Atlantic side of St Ives.
Porthmeor sits below Tate St Ives, a short walk from the harbour and historic centre. Its west-facing beach break receives more Atlantic swell than Porthminster on the sheltered side of town, while St Ives Surf School runs lessons and hire from a permanent base on the sand.
The compact setting has limits. Rocks frame the beach, high tide reduces working space and the school notes that waves may stop breaking on the beach around high water. Lesson times therefore move with the tide rather than following one daily timetable.

Use Trenwith for a longer stay
The small Porthmeor car park is short stay and has only 30 spaces. Trenwith is the largest council car park and has a seasonal shuttle to the town centre.
Keep the surf and swim zones clear
Follow the RNLI flags and give the rock edges room, particularly as the beach narrows toward high tide.
Build in a no-surf option
Tate St Ives overlooks the beach, with the harbour, shops and coastal walking close by if the school decides conditions are unsuitable.

Porthmeor's council car park has 30 spaces and a three-hour maximum. For a longer visit, Trenwith offers far more capacity; St Erth park-and-ride and the train are useful peak-season alternatives.
Food and facilities
Beach cafés, toilets and the town centre are close on foot. Surf hire is available from the school, so visitors arriving by train or bus do not need to transport a board through town.
Dogs
Dogs are prohibited from 10am–6pm between 15 May and 30 September under the current Cornwall Council restriction.
After surfing
Tate St Ives stands directly above Porthmeor, and the harbour side of town is a short walk away. Check individual opening times before relying on an indoor stop.

Can beginners surf here?
Yes on suitable days with instruction. Lesson times vary with tide and conditions, and the beach is not useful for lessons at every stage of high water.
When is Porthmeor lifeguarded in 2026?
The RNLI lists daily patrols from 3 April to 1 November, 10am–6pm. Look for the flags because service can change at short notice.
Where should I park for a full day?
Use Trenwith or public transport rather than relying on the small three-hour Porthmeor car park. The seasonal Trenwith shuttle runs toward the town centre.
