Our review

The Pier House is where we go in Westward Ho! when the meal is for a special occasion. Its position on the cliff gives it a real sense of arrival, and the outlook across Bideford Bay makes the setting feel different from an everyday pub meal.

The view is the star. On the right evening, you can watch the light change across the water and the sun drop towards the horizon. The restaurant interior is comfortable and polished without feeling overly formal, so it works for anything from a family celebration to a meal for two.

It is also one of the more practical local options for a large group. The Pier House advertises dedicated spaces for birthdays, parties, gala dinners and other celebrations, while the main restaurant, bar and terraces give groups several ways to use the venue. Contact the team ahead of time so they can match your party to the right space.

The official menu is built around modern English cooking and familiar favourites, with seafood, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices as well as a children’s menu. There is also a Sunday carvery, plus coffee and homemade cakes earlier in the day.

Why it works for an occasion

The combination of a proper restaurant, a relaxed bar, outdoor sunset terraces and the sea view means the venue can feel celebratory without everyone needing to dress formally. It works well when a group includes different ages or people who want different levels of formality.

For a birthday, family gathering or larger celebration, arrange it directly rather than relying on a walk-in table. The Pier House promotes a dedicated Bay Suite for events, and its team can advise on room choice, menus and group requirements.
